About the splenectomy procedure
What is a splenectomy?
A splenectomy is the surgical procedure to remove the spleen. The spleen is the organ that filters unneeded materials and fights against infections. Thus, patients need to be aware of a long-term risk of infection after the splenectomy.
For the intervention, you will receive general anesthesia. There are two types of surgery: open surgery and laparoscopic. Laparoscopic (or robotic) surgery means that the surgeon uses miniature instruments such as cameras and other tools to remove the spleen. It is a type of minimal invasive surgery. However, in the case of a ruptured spleen, usually open surgery is the best option.
Why do patients undergo a splenectomy?
There are many medical conditions that drive patients to undergo a splenectomy. Among the most frequent causes are ruptured spleens, which have the risk of internal bleeding. In addition, splenectomies are also done to ease the symptoms of an enlarged spleen. Lastly, the surgery helps patients with cancer, infections and blood disorders.
What is the recovery like?
Laparoscopic surgery has a faster recovery time than open surgery. Therefore, patients can even go home in the same day. For open surgeries, the patient will stay in the hospital for 2-6 days.
In the long-term, other organs take over the function of the spleen. However, patients need to be more careful and report immediately any first signs of an infection. Also, the doctos may recommend several vaccines against influenza, pneumonia etc for prevention.
